Broken Key Fobs

Like all electronic devices keys for cars can malfunction. When they stop working they are not difficult to repair. First, you'll need to identify the cause.

Most of the time when the key fob ceases to function, it's because the battery is dead. The simplest and most cost-effective solution is to replace the battery. It's possible to do this at your home.

If cleaning the fob is not working, you can disassemble it. Your fob has a circuit board inside which houses a number of "contact pads" for each button that you can press on the fob (lock buttons or trunk buttons, etc.). These contact pads are rubber-like and coated in an electricity conducting film that begins to fade as time passes. You can clean your key fob contacts with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab for removing any corrosion.

You could also try using a pair or tweezers to put the contacts back on your key fob if suspect that they are damaged or loose. If you do this it is an excellent idea to put some silicone on the back of your key fob before inserting the new contacts. Silicone can help seal the contacts and keep water out.

Another reason to consider a non-functioning key fob is that it is no longer linked with the vehicle. When you press the button on a key fob, it sends a message to the car that tells it what it is trying to accomplish. If the key fob has been disconnected, it won't be able to recognize the car and will not allow you to start the engine.

It's time to contact an locksmith or dealership technician if you are unable to get the key fob that you want to pair with your vehicle. They will have the equipment required to reprogram the fob and make it work. It's likely that you'll have to pay for the service, but it's cheaper than buying a brand new key fob.

Keys that aren't responsive

It's a nightmare when a key on your computer fails to function. First, make sure the key isn’t blocked by anything. Dust, hair and other debris could build up over time and block a key's movement or cause interference to its circuitry. Try gently taking the key off and clean the area beneath it using a rag and rubbing alcohol.  key fob repairs  may be all you need to do to make your key work again.

If the key does not work, it's possible that it's a problem with your software. Some keys are mapped to specific actions in games and if your key isn't working as you expect it to, you should check your game settings to ensure that the key is properly mapped.

You may also try reinstalling your keyboard drivers to resolve the problem. Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause your keyboard to stop functioning, so it is important to always keep them up to date whenever possible.

Another possibility is that the key may be damaged. There are two circuits that comprise each key switch and as time passes, they get worn out until they no longer register when pressed. If this is the case it is recommended to replace the keyboard because the keyboard will no longer perform as it should.

If you've gone through all of these fixes, but the keyboard is still not responding, it's probably time to get your laptop or external keyboard inspected by an expert. There may be a physical problem with the membrane that covers your keyboard, or it could be that one of the keys has become damaged.

You can test the keys using a keyboard tester. The website will let you know whether the keys are functioning correctly or not. If they're registered correctly in the latter, it's most likely a software issue. The other solutions can be applied to restore full functionality. Alternately, you can use an external keyboard for a temporary solution until the internal keyboard can be repaired or replaced.

Keys that aren't working

Keys that don't function are an enormous pain, but fortunately, they are usually relatively simple to fix. Most of the time the problem is caused by a piece of grime under the key or it's simply not properly connected to the laptop or keyboard. If you are unsure, clean the keys with canned air and blow out any dirt or dust.

It is possible that the key has been out of alignment with the lock. It is possible to correct this problem with a professional. However, it is more likely that the key needs to be replaced. If your car key is electronic and cannot be changed by pressing a metal manual key into the ignition, it's likely the transponder chip inside has stopped working, and you'll have to get a new one programmed.

If your external keyboard or laptop keys aren't not registering any action at all, try using a key test website. This will help you determine if the keyboard malfunctioning or if software is causing problems.

A switch that isn't working properly could also be the reason for a key not performing as is. You can check whether your keyboard is mechanical by looking underneath the keycap to determine if any debris is stuck. If you spot something you want to remove, make use of canned air to remove it, then take off the keycap. This will let you replace the hooks which connect the retainer and the switch and, hopefully, restore functionality to your key.

If a key on your keyboard does not perform the desired function in just one program, then it is likely that the settings for the game's keyboard have mapped the key to perform a different action. Check the settings of your keyboard and press the key again to determine whether it's functioning as intended. If you're still having problems, it is best to buy a new keyboard. It can be installed by an expert. This is especially important when you're playing games that require the use of a lot of keyboards.
